Alarm over Uruguay: their plane cannot enter the United States

Uruguay is facing unexpected trouble just hours before its World Cup debut. La Celeste remains stranded at its training base in Cancún because the aircraft scheduled to fly the team to Miami lacks the documentation required under U.S. regulations.
The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) is scrambling to find a solution so the delegation can arrive before 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time, the deadline for entering the country ahead of the opening match against Saudi Arabia.
Uruguay is Spain’s main rival in this group. The delay is already disrupting plans for the press conference and the rest of Thursday’s schedule. According to the Uruguayan press, FIFA and the AUF are working together to find a swift and effective solution.
The players are waiting at the Mayakoba complex, the base of operations for the two-time World Cup champions. Marcelo Bielsa’s squad will likely have to adjust part of its itinerary on the eve of a debut that is crucial to Uruguay’s ambitions.
Uruguay is scheduled to kick off its World Cup campaign on Monday at 6:00 p.m. local time in Miami. With less than 24 hours to resolve the travel issue and reach the United States, the disruption could affect the team’s preparation and performance, a situation Spain will be monitoring closely.
