The numbers behind Devin Williams’ deal with the Mets

Despite a slow start, the wheels are now in motion and the gears are greased, with the money flying across the world of MLB in a number of ways. This time, it’s the New York Mets who have spent big, agreeing a huge deal with former All-Star reliever Devin Williams.

Devin Williams’ Mets contract: the numbers

Williams will join the New York Mets on a three-year contract worth a total of USD 51 million, according to league-insider reports.

The agreement includes a USD 6 million signing bonus, spread evenly across the three seasons. The deal features no opt-outs or options, signalling a firm commitment from both sides.

Under the surface, the breakdown appears to be roughly USD 45 million in base salary over three years, plus the prorated bonus, hence the headline $51 M figure.

What is Devin Williams’ record in MLB?

At 31-years-old, Williams arrives after a rocky 2025 season with the New York Yankees, where he posted a 4.79 ERA in 67 appearances, a career-worst record.

However, historically, Williams offers plenty of upside. During his six seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers he developed a reputation as a shutdown late-inning arm. He won NL Rookie of the Year in 2020 with a minuscule 0.33 ERA over 22 outings, later posting a 1.66 ERA across three seasons and racking up 65 saves. He also earned two All-Star selections.

Milwaukee traded Williams to the Yankees for pitcher Nestor Cortes and infielder Caleb Durbin in December. Local New York news outlet Spectrum News reported that in his new team, “Williams could replace free agent closer Edwin Díaz or complement him in a rebuilt bullpen.”
