This foreign country is guaranteed a representative in the 2025 World Series
The 2025 MLB season is heading towards its climax, with only four teams still in contention to lift the Commissioner’s Trophy.
October is aging fast, and with it, the 2025 MLB season is heading towards its climax. Baseball’s grandest stage is nearly set, with just two more series standing between us and the World Series. The Blue Jays, Mariners, Dodgers, and Brewers remain in contention, each battling shoulder to shoulder for the Commissioner’s Trophy in matchups that promise high drama - and a distinctly Mexican flavor.
Mexico’s World Series presence once again assured
As has become tradition, Mexico will be represented in the final rounds of the postseason. No matter how things shake out, at least one Mexican player is guaranteed to reach the World Series. Since 2020, we’ve seen Alex Verdugo with the Yankees, Alec Thomas with the Diamondbacks, José Urquidy with the Astros, and Julio Urías, Victor González, and Austin Barnes with the Dodgers carry the flag. This year will be no different.
Banda carries the torch in the NL
While the Brewers currently have no active Mexican players—Luis Urías recently rejoined the organization but is in Triple-A—the Dodgers do. Left-handed reliever Anthony Banda, who has Mexican heritage, is part of L.A.’s postseason bullpen. Banda had a solid regular season, posting a 3.18 ERA across 71 appearances, and was a key contributor during last year’s playoff run, allowing just one earned run in 10 outings. He’s rumored to be interested in representing Mexico in the next World Baseball Classic, adding another layer of pride to his postseason presence.
Kirk, Muñoz, and Arozarena lead AL charge
The most prominent Mexican stars this October are in the American League. Alejandro Kirk, the catcher from Tijuana, has been a cornerstone for the Blue Jays since his debut five years ago. In 2025, he hit .282 with 15 home runs and 76 RBIs, and he’s been instrumental in Toronto’s run to the ALCS. Kirk homered twice in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Yankees, becoming the first Mexican-born player to hit two home runs in a single postseason game. The Blue Jays are now just four wins away from their first World Series appearance since 1993 - the last time they won it all.
Over in Seattle, the Mariners are chasing history. With two Mexican All-Stars on their roster, they’re making a serious push for their first-ever World Series berth. Closer Andrés Muñoz, from Culiacán, Sinaloa, has been lights-out, notching 38 saves and a 1.73 ERA in the regular season. He’s been flawless in the postseason, pitching 5.1 scoreless innings across five appearances, including a clutch save in Game 1 of the ALCS against Toronto.
Then there’s Randy Arozarena. Though born in Cuba, he became a naturalized Mexican citizen at the first opportunity and proudly represents the country. While his bat has been relatively quiet this postseason (.174 average), his defensive contributions - like a game-saving sliding catch in Game 1 of the ALCS - have been vital. Arozarena also reached a milestone this October, becoming the fifth Cuban-born player with the most postseason hits in MLB history.
Mexico’s guaranteed spot in the Fall Classic
In short, whether it’s Toronto or Seattle emerging from the ALCS, Mexico will be represented in the World Series. And if the Dodgers prevail in the National League, Anthony Banda will carry that torch as well.
