One more edition of the World Baseball Classic is over, Japan confirmed themselves as champions after defeating Team USA and claimed the 3rd title in their history.

Japan arrived to the final after squeezing past Mexico 6-5 in a fantastic semi-final game. Meanwhile, Team USA thundered their way to the final by beating Cuba 14-2 in the first of the two semi-finals. The Cuban players gave a strong performance but the US masterclass was too much; Cuba’s lack of power was no match for the American bullpen and Trea Turner came out as their new power hitter.

Cuba’s tournament performance

They lost their debut against the Netherlands 4-2 before losing to Italy 6-3. However, a 13-4 win over Panama and a 7-1 smashing of Chinese Taipei meant they moved onto the quarter-finals against Australia, eventually beating them 4-3.

For their historic performance, each player will receive $25,600 and the payment will be made between 1 and 12 weeks in one or more transactions.

This quantity corresponds to what was announced by MLB that payments will be performance related. Simply by participating in the tournament meant that $300,000 was to be granted to the Cubans, 50% of which goes to the players and 50% to the federation.
