Venezuela vs Israel: The lay of the land

Venezuela is in the quarterfinals, so what now?

Now on a 3-0 record in the group following their 4-1 win over Nicaragua, Venezuela has secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament. That’s to say, it will be interesting to see how they lineup against Israel on Tuesday night. In truth, the curious thing about Venezuela, is that they are always favored to go far in the WBC, but they always seem to fall short of expectations. There was of course their third-place finish in 2009 after they won their group, but since then, they haven’t been able to replicate that kind of form and quite frankly, haven’t even made it out of their group in the last two tournaments. Now that they have, the focus will of course be on whether they can deliver on their obvious promise. While we’re not convinced, it doesn’t hurt that they have Ronald Acuña Jr. on the roster. The Braves star was given permission to participate by his team after initial concerns about his health.

Israel need to get back on track

Following a 10-0 drubbing at the hands of Puerto Rico, Israel will be looking to steady the ship against Venezuela. The problem is, it’s not likely to be any easier. In just their second WBC, Israel definitely endeared themselves to baseball fans in the last tournament. In Seoul, not only did they progress from the group, but they beat the highly favored Cubans before losing to the Netherlands and Japan and ultimately finishing 6th overall. They did of course get themselves an impressive comeback win against Nicaragua, so we know they can play, but they’ve got to improve. As was the case last time, the team is largely made up of Jewish Americans, the legendary Shlomo Lipetz the only Israeli born player at 44-years-old. Of course, there are other solid players in the lineup such as major league starting pitcher in Dean Kremer and Red Sox reliever Richard Bleier. Truth be told, this is a team that has talent, it’s simply a question of whether they can deliver.
