Venezuela vs Puerto Rico: The lay of the land

Is this Venezuela’s moment?

The curious thing about Venezuela, is that they are always favored to go far in the WBC, but they always seem to fall short of expectations. There was of course their third-place finish in 2009 after they won their group, but since then, they haven’t been able to replicate that kind of form and quite frankly, haven’t even made it out of their group in the last two tournaments. While it serves as no excuse, it must be said that they’ve definitely found themselves in some tough groups over the years. On the other hand, they’ve definitely received a major boost in the form of Ronald Acuña Jr. being included in the roster. The Braves star was given permission to participate by his team after initial concerns about his health.

Puerto Rico is good but they can be better

In simple form, Puerto Rico has been one of the most solid teams across every edition of the WBC. Indeed, the team finished second in the last two tournaments and are poised to make a deep run once again. With a roster made up of primarily MLB players, this team is no joke, but it’s worth noting that they aren’t as strong as they have been in their last two WBC editions. There is also the major blow they received with the absence of Carlos Correa - his wife is due to give birth. Yet, they do have Francisco Lindor, Javier Báez and Kiké Hernández, so keep an eye on this team.
