When will Max Scherzer debut in the 2024 MLB season?

The veteran pitcher will pitch for the first time in 2024 this Sunday after recovering from a herniated disc in his back and thumb problems.

The 2024 Major League Baseball season began with the absence of some of the best pitchers due to injury. They have been returning little by little, as was the case with Gerrit Cole with the Yankees and now with Max Scherzer with the Texas Rangers. The pitcher revealed that he will be in charge of starting Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner needed back surgery for a herniated disc late last year. In addition, he has suffered discomfort in his thumb. During rehabilitation, he made three starts in Triple-A and showed his dominance with 17 strikeouts.

Scherzer came to Texas last year via trade with the New York Mets and made eight starts for the Rangers with a 4-2 record. His ERA was 3.20 after pitching 45 complete innings and allowing 16 earned runs. In addition, he struck out 53 of the 177 batters he faced with the Texan team.

How will the Rangers rotation look with the return of Max Scherzer?

During the 40-year-old pitcher’s absence, the Rangers rotation consisted of Andrew Heaney, Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Lorenzen, Jon Gray, and Dane Dunning.

Occasionally, manager Bruce Bochy used José Ureña as a starter. It’s all too likely that the starting rotation will remain at six pitchers with Scherzer’s arrival.
