The wait is over: “play ball” was officially shouted and the 2023 MLB season kicked off on Thursday. For the first time since 1968, all teams saw activity on Opening Day.

Mexico’s players had a good day - and this is a look back at the country’s stand-out performers in the world’s top baseball league.

The first hit by a Mexican in the 2023 MLB season went to Joey Meneses, who impressed despite the Washington Nationals’ loss to the Atlanta Braves. ‘CabaJoey’ went 2 for 5 and picked up a run as he opened up a year that looks very promising.

Urías hits home run as Orioles beat Red Sox

Earlier on Thursday, Ramón Urías (2 for 4) hit a two-run homer in Boston as the Baltimore Orioles edged the Red Sox 10-9. Urías’ HR was not only the first by a Mexican in 2023 - it was also the first on Opening Day by a player from the country since 2003. In the same game, the Red Sox’s Alex Verdugo went 2 for 5 and accounted for two of his team’s runs.

Arozarena, Paredes help Rays to Tigers mauling

The Tampa Bay Rays blanked the Detroit Tigers 4-0 with a good performance from a couple of Mexicans. The Rays’ Randy Arozarena, the man of the moment in Mexico, went 1 for 4 with an RBI, while his team-mate Issac Paredes also went 1 for 4 and scored a run.

In one of the best games of the day, the Toronto Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-9. A hit by the Blue Jays’ Alejandro Kirk in the first inning allowed Bo Bichette and Daulton Varsho to score runs. In the end, he went 1 for 5 with two RBIs.
