Mays was a two-time National League MVP. First, in 1954 when the Giants were in New York, and then in 1965, when the organization was already based in San Francisco.

His greatness with both the bat and the glove was unmatched. The Westfield, Alabama native was a 12-time Gold Glove winner, putting him in first place, sharing the position with Roberto Clemente.

In collective achievements, he was part of the winning team of the 1954 World Series, when the Giants defeated the Cleveland Indians in four games. A year earlier he had been out of activity due to his military service.
