The Los Angeles Angels (49-48) swept the New York Yankees (50-47) with a 7-3 game three victory at Angel Stadium, heaping insult upon injury as the Yankees losing streak extends to four.

The Yankees are reeling, winning only two of their last ten games plonking them at the bottom of the AL East for the first time in 33 years. If the season ended today, the ‘Bronx Bombers’ would be out of the wild card race.

Angels starter Chase Silseth did an excellent job from the bump to earn his second win of the season. The 23-year-old right-hander pitched 5.2 innings, striking out 10 Yankees, while surrendering only two walks and a solo home run to Giancarlo Stanton for the pinstripes’ only run.

The New York bullpen gave perhaps a little too much respect to Shohei Ohtani, walking him four times. However, Carlos Rodón managed to strike out the Japanese phenom in the fourth inning with a good combination of sliders and four-seam fastballs.

Taylor Ward and Luis Rengifo showed up with the bat for Los Angeles. Ward putting up the first two runs with a blast in the first inning to score Ohtani, while Rengifo added two more with a homer in the second scoring Hunter Renfroe. The Angels now have an 18-game streak with at least one home run, tying a franchise record.

Problems with the Yankees’ bats

New York have struggled to hit the ball during the 2023 season and eventually fired hitting coach Dillon Lawson, replacing him with Sean Casey. This Angels series, however, has taken them to a very dark place indeed, where those famous thundering bats are virtually silent.

In the three games against the Halos, Yankees hitters struck out 42 times. That was enough for the second-worst record in a three-game series in franchise history. The most strikeouts suffered by New York was in 2021 against the White Sox when 43 Manhattan Mules were struck out.
