The Astros came from behind and capitalized on the Yankees’ mistakes to seal an 8-7 win at Daikin Park. Devin Williams suffered his sixth loss of the year, while Bryan King collected his fifth victory of the season.

New York jumped ahead early, with Giancarlo Stanton launching his 18th home run of the year to open the second inning. The left fielder, working a full count against Jason Alexander, hammered a low pitch into the left-field stands. The Yankees’ power theme continued in the fourth, when Austin Wells belted a two-run shot that drove in Ben Rice, marking his 20th homer of the 2025 campaign.

The Astros fight back

Houston broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Ramón Urías lifted a sac fly to bring home Yainer Díaz, while Víctor Caratini remained on first. The Yankees responded in the sixth with their own sacrifice fly from Ryan McMahon, extending the lead to 4-1.

But Jeremy Peña cut the gap with a solo blast off Will Warren, forcing New York to turn to the bullpen. Fernando Cruz gave up a double to Yordan Álvarez, who then came around to score on a grounder from José Altuve after a wild pitch moved him to third.

Álvarez ties it up

Álvarez returned to the plate in the seventh with two on and two outs, lacing a rocket into center field. Jacob Melton scored from second to tie the game, and an errant throw by Stanton allowed Álvarez to reach second.

Williams unraveled in the eighth, walking Taylor Trammel with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run. His outing ended one out shy of the frame after throwing 34 pitches.

Yankees give it away, but keep swinging

Tempers boiled over when manager Aaron Boone was ejected after replacing Williams with Camilo Doval – who was also tossed by home plate umpire Brian Walsh following a heated dispute over the strike zone.

Peña drove in another run on a grounder to right, Álvarez grounded out, and the Astros added two more – one on a balk and another on a wild pitch – to stretch the lead to 8-4.

The Yankees mounted a late push in the ninth, with Ryan McMahon and Aaron Judge singling off Bryan Abreu before Cody Bellinger blasted a three-run homer to pull them within one. But Jazz Chisholm Jr. froze on a slider that nicked the outside corner for the final out, sealing Houston’s comeback win.
