Yankees signing Juan Soto before free agency is not likely
According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, there is “zero chance” that the Yankees make a deal with Juan Soto before free agency this winter.
The New York Yankees picked up Juan Soto for the final year of his contract before hitting free agency and gave up five players and $31 million for the privelage. The pinstripes seem to be hopeful that an in-season deal can be done to extend that contract, bypassing the free market of free agency.
Hal Brenner discussed the issue was in hand and while Soto’s agent Scott Boras wouldn’t normally discuss contracts in-season, there might be an exception made this time around. “This is a unique situation and a very unique player,” said Steinbrenner. “So, I wouldn’t be shocked if there was a conversation or two had possibly during the course of the season.”
ESPN then reported that Soto’s camp was “open” to the concept, but now it looks like that may not be so. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale has said that there is “absolutely zero chance” of a deal pre free agency.
“While Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said he’s interested in engaging in contracts talks with right fielder Juan Soto and agent Scott Boras to avert free agency, with Soto saying he’s willing to listen, the cold truth is there is absolutely zero chance Soto will sign before he’s a free agent. He turned down a 15-year, $440 million contract offer from the Washington Nationals two years ago. So, what’s another six months? Soto can keep on hitting, sit back, and watch the bidding war emerge between the Yankees and Mets. Let’s see who blinks first and gives him $500 million.”
Soto has been making a point for just that outcome in the Bronx, as the three-time All Star has slashed .317/.414/561 through 47 games, notching up 11 home runs and 37 RBI while leading the AL with 57 hits.
