Yordan Álvarez wants to play left field
The Astros DH from Las Tunas, Cuba has played 147 MLB games over the last five seasons in left field, for a total of 1,196 innings. But Álvarez wants more.
Cuban player Yordan Álvarez has been the designated hitter for the Houston Astros for the last three years, but the two-time All-Star now wants to change his role a little in the Astros lineup and will be looking for more playing time as a left fielder.
In an interview with MLB.com, the 2019 American League Rookie of the Year, it was revealed that he would like to play more in left field during the 2024 season.
“I like playing there (in left field). I understand that I won’t be the every day player out there because I haven’t done that in the past, but I want to be out there,” Alvarez said.
Yordan Álvarez was born 26 years ago in Las Tunas, Cuba. As a left fielder, he has played a total of 1,196 innings in 147 games over the last five seasons. In that time, Álvarez has had 213 defensive opportunities come his way, of which 196 resulted in putouts, 13 assists, and only four errors.

Joe Espada is in his first season as manager of the Astros after Dusty Baker’s retirement, and one of his duties is organizing the Astros lineup for Opening Day.
With this in mind, the infield consists of catcher Yainer Díaz, first baseman José Abreu, second baseman José Altuve, third baseman Alex Bregman, and shortstop Jeremy Peña. The outfield features Kyle Tucker in right, Jake Myers in center, and Chas McCormick in left. When McCormick can’t be on the field, Alvarez will take his place.
