He's back
Joel Embiid has missed the last two games with a knee injury, but some are questioning the severity of the reigning MVP’s knock. He was a late scratch against the Denver Nuggets and head coach Mike Malone had an issue with the way the Sixers conducted their injury report. He was listed as out for last game against the Trail Blazers, and tonight came in as questionable, but after two games he is back on the floor tonight in Golden State.
The Sixers have their big man back which means he gets plugged back in to the starting five and Paul Reed will be coming off the bench as House, Harris, Obure Jr. and Patrick Beverley. Tyrese Maxey will sit out for another night while he recovers from an ankle sprain.
NBA Standings
Having a look at the standings these two teams are in very different positions in their respective conferences. The Sixers three game losing streak has distanced them from the Eastern Conference leading Boston Celtics. They are currently 3rd and the East, sitting six games back of the C’s and two games back of the Bucks. The Warriors are way off pace in the West. They are five games of .500 and are 12th in the conference, which means they would miss out of the playoffs and the Play-In Tournament if the season ended today. The Warriors know that they most likely won’t be fighting for home court in the first round. Their priority has to be ensuring they make the playoffs, and avoiding the Play-In.
Curry cookin
Nothing outlasts Father Time. There have been dynasties throughout the centuries that have conquered the world, but at some point they fade into the pages of history. It appears that is what’s going on in Golden State this year. Two years season’s from their last NBA title, they Warriors look like an aging team, far from the dominant side that had the league in the palm of their hands for nearly a decade. While the team may be getting older, Steph Curry seems to be ageless. He scored 45 against the Lakers last game, and averaging 27.3 points a game, which is fourth best in his 15 year career.
Who is going to step up?
The Sixers have been with out Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey among others over the last few games, which hasn’t boded well for Nick Nurse’s side. It’s been Paul Reed and Kelly Oubre Jr. stepping up for the Sixers in the mean time but it hasn’t been enough.
Warriors last game
The Warriors and the Lakers played one of the games of the year from Chase Center on Saturday night. Two of the all time greats went head to head and it took double overtime to settle scores. Golden State went up 14 in the third quarter which proved to be the largest lead of game, but LA came battling back to take the lead with under two minutes to go in the 4th. Curry, who had 46 on the night tied the game up with under 5 seconds to go in regulation. LeBron, who had 36 points, had a chance to win it in the first overtime but hits runner from outside the lane rattled out and pushed the game to a second overtime. Curry would put the Warriors up by one with a clutch three with 4.7 left, but that was enough time to let LeBron drive to the bucket, get fouled and hit two game winning FTs to hold off the Warriors.
Sixers last game
The Sixers travelled to the Pacific Northwest to take on one of the bottom feeders in the league and got smoked without Joel Embiid. Philly may have been without their big man but where they struggled was on the perimeter. They shot under 20%, going 5/29 from downtown. Despite the terrible shooting, Philly held tight for the first two quarters, but Portland ran away with the game in the second half thanks to Jerami Grant’s 27 points and Malcom Brogdon’s 24 as the Trail Blazers took a 31 point lead and coasted to victory.
