Originally from West Texas, Chávez comes from a Mexican-American family, and she takes great pride in her heritage. Her parents, Andrea and Sonny Chávez, have been instrumental in her journey to the top of the high school basketball rankings and her eventual rise to the WNBA draft radar.
Despite hearing comments throughout her career that she was “too good for a Latina”, Chávez has always set her sights much higher. In an interview with ESPN, she made her ambitions clear:
“I don’t want to be good for a Mexican. I want to be good, period. I want to be the best. I want to change women’s basketball.”
Welcome home Aaliyah Chavez!!!
