Chauncey Billups’ contract details: Salary and years remaining with the Portland Trail Blazers

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups is at the center of a major illegal betting scandal. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the legendary former player was arrested by the FBI for his alleged involvement in a betting ring.

Billups was detained just hours after appearing on the sideline for Portland’s opening game of the 2025-26 NBA season, a 118-114 home loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Reports link Billups to illegal poker operation

According to later reports, Billups’ alleged offenses are not related to NBA games he has coached. Instead, ABC News claims they are connected to “an illegal poker operation tied to the Mafia.”

The investigation reportedly centers on financial transactions uncovered during a broader federal probe into organized gambling activity.

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and former Cleveland Cavaliers player Damon Jones were also arrested for alleged illegal gambling offences.

Billups’ coaching record and recent extension

The 49-year-old, a five-time All-Star who won the 2004 NBA Finals with the Detroit Pistons, was hired as Portland’s head coach in June 2021. In four seasons, the Trail Blazers have yet to reach the postseason and have never finished higher than fourth in the Northwest Division.

Despite his 117-211 overall record, Billups signed a two-year contract extension in April 2025, keeping him under contract through the end of the 2027-28 season.

Trail Blazers keep terms of Billups’ deal quiet

Financial terms of the extension were not publicly disclosed, though reports at the time indicated that Billups received a raise. Sources estimated he earned around $4.7 million in the 2024-25 season, during which Portland finished strong with a 23-18 record in the second half.

“I’m just so happy with what we’ve done and where I think we can go,” Billups said after signing the extension. “So much promise here. I’m pumped about it.”
