The USA will play Cuba in a World Cup qualifier game on Monday night. The Americans began their two-game qualifying window on Friday with a 75-83 win at Puerto Rico, then spent the weekend in Havana preparing for their next test.
“I’ve never done something like this,” US coach Jim Boylen said.
“And that’s what we’ve told these guys. This group of guys, they chose to play these two games, on the road, in what I call enemy territory. And they decided to spend the Fourth of July, in Havana, when they didn’t have to do this.”
Previous meeting between Cuba and USA
The teams last met in a World Cup qualifier in November. The US rallied towards to end to win 95-90. It was the first game of the six-game qualifying round for both teams.
The Americans (4-1) have qualified for the second round and are on track to reach the 2023 World Cup. Cuba (0-5), on the other hand, have been eliminated, with only pride at stake on Monday.
