Third-place table at the 2026 World Cup so far: who would Mexico play?
Ecuador takes the lead, but Sweden, Croatia and even Uruguay remain in the race to become Mexico’s first knockout-stage opponent

Mexico has already done its job. Javier Aguirre’s side finished top of Group A and secured a place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup. Now the focus shifts to the other side of the bracket: who will be El Tri’s opponent?
Under the new 48-team format, FIFA advances the top two teams from each group along with the eight best third-placed teams.
As the winner of Group A, Mexico will face a third-placed team from Groups C, E, F, H or I. However, the identity of that opponent will not be known until the final group-stage matches are completed and the official bracket is determined under one of the 495 combinations set out in FIFA’s tournament regulations.
Table of best third-placed teams so far:
| Team | MP | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | PTS | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sweden | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 7 | 7 | 0 | 4 |
| 2 | Ecuador | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 4 |
| 3 | Bosnia and Herzegovina | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 5 | 6 | -1 | 4 |
| 4 | Paraguay | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 4 | -2 | 4 |
| 5 | Croatia | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 4 | -1 | 3 |
| 6 | South Korea | 3 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 3 | -1 | 3 |
| 7 | Algeria | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 4 | -2 | 3 |
| 8 | Scotland | 3 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 4 | -3 | 3 |
| 9 | Cape Verde | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| 10 | Belgium | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
| 11 | DR Congo | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | -1 | 1 |
| 12 | Senegal | 2 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 3 | 6 | -3 | 0 |
At present, Sweden sits at the top of the standings among the third-placed teams. The Scandinavians have four points and hold the tiebreaker over Ecuador thanks to having scored seven goals during the group stage.
If the tournament ended today, Sweden would face the winner of Group H, while the remaining third-placed teams would be allocated according to FIFA’s predetermined knockout bracket, which contains 495 different scenarios depending on which teams qualify.
That means the outlook can still change dramatically over the coming days.

Mexico’s possible opponents
Based on the current standings and FIFA’s allocation system, Mexico’s Round-of-32 opponent will come from Groups C, E, F, H or I. Although the final outcome depends on the remaining fixtures, the current projections suggest the following probabilities:
Estimated probability of Mexico’s next opponent
- Ecuador: 27%
- Sweden: 22%
- Scotland: 14%
- Croatia: 12%
- Cape Verde: 10%
- Uruguay: 8%
- Senegal: 4%
- Iraq (depending on the outcome of Group I): 3%
Ecuador currently represents the most likely opponent because of its position in the standings and the combinations produced by FIFA’s tournament bracket.
Sweden is close behind after posting the strongest record among the third-placed teams so far, while Croatia, Scotland and Uruguay still depend on the results of the final group-stage matches to determine whether they qualify and where they are placed in the bracket.
Now it is a waiting game
Mexico has already achieved its primary objective by winning Group A, earning a favourable position in the knockout draw.
Attention now turns to the remaining group-stage fixtures, which will determine El Tri’s first opponent in the Round of 32.
Over the next few hours, the final pieces of the World Cup puzzle will fall into place. Mexico’s opponent remains uncertain, but one thing is already clear: El Tri has put itself in an excellent position as the knockout stage begins.
