Doncic’s numbers with the Lakers outstrip Kobe, Magic, Kareem and LeBron
The Slovenian has started the new season on the right foot. A radical physical change, an MVP as his goal, and franchise records already being written.
The 2025 NBA season is officially underway, and the race for the Larry O’Brien Trophy is heating up. While the Los Angeles Lakers aren’t the top favorites this year—especially with LeBron James sidelined—they’ve found a new spark in Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic, who’s off to a jaw-dropping start.
In just two games, Doncic has scored a combined 92 points, breaking a 56-year-old franchise record previously held by Jerry West (81 points in 1969). That’s more than Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, or even LeBron ever managed in their first two outings of a season. Doncic dropped 43 points in the opener against Golden State and followed it up with 49 against Minnesota, leading the Lakers to a 128–110 win.
Only two players have scored more in NBA history
This explosive start places Doncic among the NBA’s elite. Only Wilt Chamberlain and Anthony Davis have posted higher two-game season-opening totals in league history.
Even Michael Jordan didn’t crack this particular leaderboard. Doncic also edged out Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had a historic week of his own.
And while he may have been the only one to achieve something of this magnitude with the Lakers, there are only a couple of names that surpass him at the NBA level (hint: Michael Jordan wasn’t one). We’re talking about that monster who dominated at will and pleasure during the 1960s, and who honestly isn’t the least bit surprising to see here because of the milestones he broke and achieved throughout his career: Wilt Chamberlain.
In addition to an equally imposing power forward in recent years, who, despite arriving in a more competitive version of the League, had enough talent to write his name in gold letters in this same section: Anthony Davis. Both with an incredible record, which, at least for now, has them at the top of the list.
NBA players with the most points in the first two games
- Wilt Chamberlain (1963) - 106 pts in his first two games
- Anthony Davis (2016) 95 pts in his first two games
- Luka Doncic (2025) 92 pts in his first two games
- Michael Jordan (1990) 91 pts in his first two games
- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2025) 90 pts in his first two games
What’s behind this surge? Doncic came into the season with a noticeably leaner physique and a laser-focused mindset. With MVP ambitions and a leadership role in LeBron’s absence, he’s proving he can carry the franchise when it matters most. His efficiency has been off the charts—shooting over 59% from the field and 41% from three-point range in the second game.
While it’s unlikely he’ll keep up this torrid pace all season, Doncic has already cemented himself as an early MVP contender. If he continues to lead the Lakers with this level of dominance, expect his name to stay in the spotlight—and possibly on some end-of-season hardware.
