Donovan Mitchell erupts for 43, makes NBA history to save Cavs’ season
Donovan Mitchell, who scored 39 of his 43 points in a brilliant second half, lifts the Cavaliers to 2-2 against the Pistons
Donovan Mitchell delivered a historic performance to keep the Cleveland Cavaliers alive in their playoff battle against the Detroit Pistons, tying the series at 2-2 as it heads back to Michigan for Game 5. Cleveland stopped holding back and brought their best to the floor. After the previous game saw James Harden play a decisive role, this time it was Mitchell, the other elite scorer under coach Kenny Atkinson, who took over completely.
A historic second half
This was no ordinary night for “Spida”. Mitchell finished with 43 points in just 37 minutes, but what truly made it special was how he got there: 39 of those points came in the second half.
That feat places him in rare company. Since the NBA began tracking play-by-play data, only one other player had ever produced such a scoring explosion in a single half: Sleepy Floyd, who dropped 51 points for the Golden State Warriors against the Los Angeles Lakers in 1987. Mitchell matched the rarity of that achievement while shooting 13-of-26 from the field and an impressive 13-of-15 from the free-throw line.
The response Cleveland needed
There’s no doubt this is exactly what the Cavaliers needed to believe in themselves again. They were pushed to the limit in the previous round and entered this series with doubts after being outplayed in the first two games by Detroit. But this performance at Rocket Arena, looking inward and rediscovering their quality, has completely changed the tone of the matchup.
Mitchell stole the spotlight, but he wasn’t alone. James Harden added a strong double-double with 24 points and 11 assists, and Evan Mobley filled the stat sheet with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 blocks, and 3 steals.
For Detroit, Caris LeVert led the way with 24 points against his former team, but the rest of the roster struggled. Cade Cunningham had an inefficient night, while Jalen Duren failed to impose himself in the paint once again.
The final score read 112-103, but the game was decided by a devastating stretch. Cleveland trailed by four points (52-56) late in the second quarter before unleashing a stunning 24-0 run that flipped the game completely. Detroit simply collapsed in a way rarely seen this season.
It was a momentum swing reminiscent of one last seen two years ago between the Timberwolves and Nuggets, and for Cleveland, not since 1997. Mitchell played a key role in that decisive stretch as well, scoring 15 of his 43 points during the run that ultimately sealed Detroit’s fate.
All to play for in Game 5
Now the series shifts back to Detroit, where questions begin to emerge. Have the Pistons lost the aura of dominance that carried them to the top seed in the Eastern Conference? Or will they rediscover their confidence at home?
Head coach J. B. Bickerstaff, facing a Cavaliers team he once coached, will need answers quickly. Game 5 will provide them.
