Dr. Nirav Pandya, orthopedic surgeon, on Moses Moody’s injury: “The typical recovery for this surgery is 9 to 12 months”

Update:

The worst fears were confirmed for Moses Moody, and now a leading medical expert has provided clarity on what comes next. After the Golden State Warriors guard suffered a devastating knee injury against the Dallas Mavericks, imaging revealed a torn patellar tendon in his left knee, a serious injury that will sideline him long-term.

According to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Nirav Pandya, the road back will not be quick.

Moses Moody’s injury and path to recovery

Dr. Pandya explained that a torn patellar tendon does not heal on its own, making surgery necessary. During the procedure, the tendon is stitched back to the kneecap (patella), a repair that requires significant rehabilitation before an athlete can return to full strength.

“The typical recovery for this surgery is 9 to 12 months,” Pandya said, adding that return-to-play rates for athletes generally fall between 75% and 90%, depending on the study.

That timeline effectively rules Moody out not only for the remainder of this season, but potentially for the start of the next one as well.

“Good news” despite the severity

While the injury is serious, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr pointed out something positive and significant.

“There’s no damage to cartilage or bone,” Kerr said, describing the situation as a “pretty basic surgery” in structural terms.

Injuries involving multiple knee structures like ligaments and cartilage can be far more complicated and unpredictable in recovery.

How Moody’s injury happened

The injury occurred late in overtime, with just over a minute remaining. After a clean steal, Moody went up for an uncontested dunk. But as he landed, his left knee buckled awkwardly, sending him to the floor immediately.

He was unable to stand and had to be stretchered off the court, a moment that visibly shook teammates, including Stephen Curry, and silenced the arena.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Golden State. Moody was in the middle of the best season of his career, averaging 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 40.1% from three-point range.

His absence adds to a growing list of injuries, with the Warriors already missing key contributors down the final stretch of the season.
