Enzo Fernández takes center stage in Real Madrid’s transfer rethink
Madrid’s midfield overhaul puts Enzo Fernández firmly in focus as José Mourinho considers how to shape his squad next.

Real Madrid has made Enzo Fernández its top midfield target . The club has decided in recent hours to pursue the Chelsea’s Argentine midfielder after concluding that a move for Michael Olise is off the table.
On top of that, after an initial inquiry, a deal for West Ham’s Mateus Fernández has also been ruled out. The player prefers a move to Tottenham, where he believes he will have a clearer path to development.
As a result, the Spanish giants have now set plans in motion to open talks with Chelsea in the coming days. Crucially, they are banking on the player’s willingness to make the move. Enzo has already told Real Madrid he will do everything he can to push the transfer through.
Mourinho’s first-choice midfield solution
Enzo Fernández has long been José Mourinho’s preferred option to reinforce the midfield. The manager made that clear to the club from the outset.
Madrid did explore other possibilities, including Mateus Fernández and Lamine Bouaddi, a 21-year-old Moroccan talent scouted closely in recent months by chief recruiter Juni Calafat. However, Bouaddi is not the profile Mourinho is looking for.
The manager wants players with proven elite-level experience, believing younger prospects should develop around a core of established performers.
Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha was also considered at one point, especially after starting for Germany at the World Cup. But, like Bouaddi, he was ultimately viewed as too inconsistent or inexperienced for the immediate demands of the project.
That left Real Madrid circling back to their top priority: Enzo Fernández. The plan is to fully pursue him unless the deal proves impossible.

Why Enzo fits the system
Mourinho sees Enzo as the ideal modern midfielder for his system, praising his ability to cover ground, lead both on and off the pitch, and control the tempo of games.
He is viewed as a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of linking defense and attack while adding energy and structure in midfield.
Chelsea, however, are not under pressure to sell. The club recently raised funds with the €50 million ($57 million) sale of Marc Cucurella, easing financial concerns. On top of that, new manager Xabi Alonso also considers Enzo an important part of his plans.
Still, Madrid believe the player’s desire to leave could become a decisive factor if it creates tension in London.
A nine-figure deal in the making
Chelsea paid €121 million ($138 million) for Enzo in January 2023. Before that, Benfica signed him from River Plate for €45 million ($51.3 million).
Any move now would likely exceed €100 million ($114 million) due to his long-term contract, which runs until 2032.
Enzo’s admiration for Real Madrid has also previously caused issues. This season, Chelsea even fined him after public comments suggesting interest in a move to Spain.
“I’d like to live in Spain. I really like Madrid. It reminds me of Buenos Aires. I would live in Madrid. A footballer lives wherever he wants,” he said in a YouTube interview with Avirales.
Agent confirms Madrid interest
Following the controversy, his agent, former PSG midfielder Javier Pastore, addressed the situation in an interview with AS.
“Every time he has a day off, he comes to Madrid because I’m here and because he has friends there. But that’s all it is,” Pastore said. “The goal is to finish the season well at Chelsea, have a strong World Cup, and then we’ll see.”
Asked whether Enzo fits at Real Madrid as a No. 8 or No. 5, Pastore added: “He’s playing in many positions. In the last two years he’s changed a lot. With Maresca he played further forward. With Rosenior he played more as a double pivot. With Argentina he plays more as an advanced No. 8, arriving in the box.”
“He’s had two years with a lot of assists and goals, so it’s normal that coaches see him more offensively than defensively. But he can play both roles comfortably.”
Madrid’s wider transfer plans
Real Madrid want to finalize Mourinho’s final two requests as quickly as possible: a midfielder and a central defender.
To help finance a potential deal for Enzo Fernández, the club is considering a major sale from its current midfield options. Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni are both attracting interest from the Premier League.
