From 22 up to out: Magic suffer one of worst playoff collapses ever
A dominant first half turns into a historic collapse as Orlando unravels in one of the most shocking playoff losses in recent memory.
Basketball punishes any hint of overconfidence. The Orlando Magic learned that lesson in the harshest way possible, in a game that swung from total control to complete collapse.
During the first half, Orlando dictated the pace with defense, rhythm, and efficiency. Their 60–38 lead at halftime reflected clear superiority, with smooth ball movement and consistent scoring. Everything pointed to a comfortable night, a routine series-clinching win.
But the logic of the game broke down after halftime. The Detroit Pistons came back with a different intensity, applying defensive pressure that disrupted every possession. Orlando lost their clarity, decisions became forced, and the basket stopped cooperating.
The lead began to shrink gradually, not through explosive runs, but through discipline and steady execution.
Something never seen before
The third quarter raised alarms, but what followed went beyond anything expected. Orlando entered a historic scoring drought.
There were 45 minutes between made field goals, an almost unbelievable figure at this level. From 8:46 p.m. to 9:31 p.m., the ball simply would not go in.
The numbers are even harsher. 23 consecutive missed shots, the most by any playoff team this century, according to ESPN Insights.
Detroit completes the comeback
Detroit, meanwhile, held their composure on every possession. The comeback took shape with each Orlando mistake, turning a 22-point deficit into a 93–79 victory that sealed the Magic’s elimination. The finish left no doubt, with emotional and tactical control that completely unraveled their opponent.
The scale of the comeback places Detroit in a very exclusive group. They became just the third team in the play-by-play era to overcome a 20-point halftime deficit while facing elimination in the playoffs.
The benchmark remains the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2018 (25 points), followed by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2024 (20), and now Detroit in 2026 (24).
For Orlando, this is a loss that goes beyond the scoreboard. It wasn’t just a game that slipped away. It was an opportunity that seemed certain. In the playoffs, details define stories. This time, they wrote one of the most unexpected of all.
