Giannis silences the noise: what the Bucks’ win over the Knicks really says about their season
Milwaukee ease early-season doubts with a dominant win led by Antetokounmpo’s 37 points.

The Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee hosted an early-season clash between the Bucks and the Knicks – a matchup that, though premature, promised plenty of insight. Giannis Antetokounmpo’s team arrived in disarray after another turbulent summer in which the Greek star once again hinted at leaving the franchise he led to the 2021 championship. New York, meanwhile, came in with a project seemingly on the rise, fresh from reaching their first Conference Finals since 2000. That wasn’t enough for management, however, who fired Tom Thibodeau and made the somewhat puzzling move of hiring another old-school coach – Mike Brown.
This wasn’t a decisive game, but it did offer a glimpse into where both teams stand. It’s always risky to draw firm conclusions so early in the NBA season, yet overreaction is part of the league’s very DNA – as is the rush to form opinions before the dust settles. Tension is inevitable when it comes to the Bucks and Knicks, two theoretical title contenders or, at the very least, favorites to reach the Finals. After all, the gap between East and West remains wide, even if three of the last seven champions have come from the latter.
Giannis is inevitable.

In the end, Milwaukee prevailed with authority, 121–111, and delivered their best performance of the campaign so far – thanks, as ever, to their leader. Giannis Antetokounmpo put aside the offseason drama and dominated every facet of the game, posting 37 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists on a blistering 16-for-22 shooting. He scored 23 of those points in the second half, when the Bucks tightened their defense, holding New York to under 30 points per quarter while flipping a 14-point halftime deficit – the result of a 45-point explosion by the visitors in the second quarter – into a convincing win. Doc Rivers’s adjustments steadied the defense. Giannis did the rest.
The game had its share of contrasts and storylines. Mikal Bridges notched 24 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists, while Karl-Anthony Towns endured a miserable night with just eight points on 2-for-12 shooting despite pulling down 12 boards. As usual, Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 36 points, showing no fear against Milwaukee’s overwhelming physicality, though it wasn’t enough. For the Bucks, the biggest surprise of this young season was Ryan Rollins. Drafted in 2022, the guard has spent more time in the G League than the NBA, yet he’s finally making an impact. Against the Knicks, he erupted for 25 points on near-perfect shooting (8-for-11 overall, 4-for-4 from deep, and 5-for-5 at the line), adding four assists, four steals, and two rebounds. At long last, Giannis has help – even if it comes from an unexpected source.
A statement win for the Bucks.
