Golden State’s ‘Splash Brothers’ Curry and Klay make 3 point history
Warriors stars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson became the first pair in the NBA to sink 1000 post season three pointers. That’s just ridiculous.
While there is understandably still plenty of talk about Steph Curry’s abysmal shooting from distance on Monday night, the fact is that just by being on the court with his fellow sniper, the pair made history.
Warriors ‘Splash Brothers’ make NBA history
It may seem strange to talk about Steph Curry and Klay Thompson making three point history during Monday night’s Game 5 of the NBA Finals, but that’s exactly what they did. True though it is that Curry went 0 for 9 from beyond the arc, thereby bringing to an end a 233 game streak of sinking at least one three pointer, but as a pair the two were on 999 career postseason 3 pointers heading into the game. That’s to say that when Klay Thompson sank one in the first quarter, they hit the 1000 mark and with that the ‘Splash Brothers’ put there names in the history books. Incidentally, Thompson also became the second fastest to arrive at 1000 career three pointers. You can probably guess who’s No. 1.
To put that in perspective, there are currently nine NBA teams that fall short of 1,000 3-point shots registered in their entire playoff histories: the Knicks, Nets, Wizards, Grizzlies, 76ers, Timberwolves, Hornets, Pelicans and Kings. That’s to say that between two players from the Golden State Warriors, the three point record is better than several franchises.
How do others compare to Steph Curry and Klay Thompson?
If we’re perfectly honest, there isn’t really much of a comparison to be made. For starters Steph Curry is quite literally the only player in the history of the NBA to go past 500 postseason 3 pointers. Fellow ‘Splash Brother’ Klay Thompson isn’t far off with 445. Understandably they are the all time leaders of the league. NBA icon and Lakers star LeBron James sits on a more than credible 432 and then there is Curry and Thompson’s former teammate and current Nets star, Kevin Durant with 344.
Logic would seem to suggest that it will be quite sometime before another player comes close to these two, but with The NBA emphasizing long-distance shooting more and more with each passing season, it may yet be that we see a player come to the fore in the future, who can make a challenge on Curry’s seemingly insurmountable record. That being said, individual records are one thing, but to find a duo as deadly as these two Warriors, with the kind of numbers that they have put on the board, quite frankly just seems far fetched.
