No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren is a prospect with star potential. The 20-year-old, who excelled for Gonzaga Bulldogs in college basketball last season, was one of the most talked-about names in the 2022 NBA Draft, and is the kind of player the league has never seen before: he’s 7ft tall, with a 7ft 6in wingspan… but weighs just 195lbs.

The Oklahoma City Thunder opted to take a chance on Holmgren, in a selection that makes perfect sense when you take into account his basic measurements, but which carries some risk due to his lightweight frame.

Holmgren stars as Thunder beat Jazz

The early signs are that the Thunder’s gamble may well pay off. In his NBA Summer League debut in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Holmgren was the game’s outstanding player, destroying the Utah Jazz with 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and six blocks in almost 24 minutes of court time. The big man’s impressive figures helped his team to a 98-77 victory.

Holmgren registered excellent shooting percentages: seven out of nine on field goals, and four out of six on three-pointers. And he showed that he has the wherewithal to be an extraordinary player at both ends of the court.

Kings, Grizzlies and Heat also win

In Tuesday’s other Summer League games, the Sacramento Kings beat the Los Angeles Lakers 87-75, the Memphis Grizzlies saw off the Philadelphia 76ers with a 103-99 scoreline, and the Miami Heat defeated the Golden State Warriors 94-70.
