The NBA announced on Wednesday that Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter has been banned from competing.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement that “there is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment.

Why did Jontay Porter get banned from NBA?

The league said that the 24-year-old limited his own participation in games for gambling opurpses as well provided confidential information to bettors and bet on NBA games. The league added he gave a bettor information about his own health status before Toronto’s game on March 20.

The NBA said that another individual placed an $80,000 bet (that could have won $1.1 million) that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in various bets.

On that day, Porter only lasted a few minutes in the game as he said he was suffering from illness, with none of his stats meeting the totals given in the bet. The bet raised alarms and was frozen with no money being paid out to the bettor. It was here where the NBA began their investigation.

The ban is a lifetime ban, meaning that Porter will not be allowed to participate in the sport ever again.

“While legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or abnormal activity, this matter also raises important issues about the sufficiency of the regulatory framework currently in place, including the types of bets offered on our games and players. Working closely with all relevant stakeholders across the industry, we will continue to work diligently to safeguard our league and game,” Silver concluded.
