It was in September of 2022 when a 34-year-old Joe Mazzulla stepped in as interim coach for the Celtics after Ime Udoka’s suspension for violating team policies. A few months later, in February of last year, the Boston Celtics appointed Mazzulla as the permanent head coach, becoming the 19th full-time head coach in the franchise’s history.

Since then, despite having no prior experience in the NBA, he has led the side to success, and will have a chance at turning the Celtics into the most successful team in the history of the NBA, if they can overcome the Mavericks in the NBA Championship final.

Joe Mazzulla’s coaching history

Mazzulla was born in Johnston, Rhode Island. He attended Bishop Hendricken High School before moving on to play for West Virginia. His first step into coaching was with Glenville State as an assistant, but he soon moved on to Fairmont State, and then the Maine Red Claws of the G League. In 2019 he was appointed as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics before being given the job of interim coach in late 2022.

While the specific details of Mazzulla’s contract have never been revealed, various reports indicate that he receives around $4.7 million per season over the remainder of his contract, which has two more years to go.

Not much is known about Mazzulla’s personal life and how he goes about things away from the court: by all accounts he is an incredibly private person who prefers to let his players do the talking when tip-off comes around. We’re certainly not judging, it’s worked pretty well for the Celtics so far!

The Celtics now have the chance to become record holders when they take on the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Championship final on 6 June at 8:30pm ET. They beat the Pacers to get to the final while the Mavs overcame the Minnesota Timberwolves.
