The NBA has fined Jaylen Brown $50,000 after the Boston Celtics star publicly criticized officiating during a livestream following Boston’s playoff exit against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The league announced the penalty for violating its “public criticism of officiating” policy, coming just two days after Brown’s comments were made on a Twitch stream in the aftermath of the Celtics’ Game 7 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Boston had entered the series as one of the Eastern Conference favorites but ultimately collapsed after taking a 3-1 lead, dropping three straight games to be eliminated in the first round. The frustration from that turnaround clearly carried over into Brown’s postgame reaction online.

Brown’s livestream comments spark league action

During the livestream, Brown replayed a sequence involving Sixers forward Paul George, arguing that similar contact had been consistently called against him throughout the series while going unpunished on the other end.

“If you’re going to call push-offs, call that. Same move. Same refs,” Brown said. “But you gonna call me? Everybody does it… but if it would have been me, it’d have been an offensive foul.”

Brown continued to question the consistency of officiating and suggested the officiating crew treated similar plays differently depending on the player involved. The comments quickly circulated across social media before the NBA issued the fine, reinforcing the league’s long-standing stance on public criticism of referees.

Brown’s reaction came after he had been whistled for 10 offensive fouls during the series, a number that stood out in comparison to other players across the first round. The statistical disparity became part of the frustration, especially after Boston’s late-series collapse.

However, the overall foul numbers in the series were relatively balanced, with Boston committing 136 personal fouls compared to 132 by Philadelphia, suggesting a closely officiated matchup rather than one-sided enforcement.
