Update:

Christmas is over, guys. Take the tree down, turn off the blinking lights, and while you’re at you might as well just put it all in the bin. No Christmas next year.

I’m not sure, but JJ Redick’s post-festive instructions to his nearest and dearest probably went something like that, given how angry he was in the aftermath of the latest Lakers defeat, this time to the Houston Rockets.

The Los Angeles coach fumed to the press in the postgame press session, ticking all the boxes of a ‘he’s lost the players’ manager. Throwing them under Santa’s sleigh, he visibly crackled and simmered like pan-fried fat, lambasting the fact that “they don’t care enough”.

“We don’t care enough to be a professional”

We don’t care enough right now,” Redick hit out at his side who have been outscored 130-98 in the paint over their last two games. “And that’s the part that bothers you a lot. We don’t care enough to do the things that are necessary. We don’t care enough to be a professional.”

“Saturday’s practice, I told the guys, it’s going to be uncomfortable,” he added. “The meeting is going to be uncomfortable. I’m not doing another 53 games like this.”

“The two words of the day were effort and execution,” Redick said. “And I feel like when we’ve done both of those things at a high level, we’ve been a good basketball team. When we haven’t, we’re a terrible basketball team. And tonight we were a terrible basketball team. And that started legitimately right away.”

For his part, Luka Doncic, who finished with 25 points yet also 6 turnovers, admitted that he “didn’t know” what had to change, while being honest enough to say: "definitely something needs to change.

“Think we [were] blown out the last three games,” he added. "It definitely looks, like, terrible. We got to figure out, that’s the thing we have [to do]. ... We just got to talk about it. Everybody got to talk about it. I know JJ said it’s going to be uncomfortable [for everybody]. As they should be. Everybody has got to give better effort, starting with me.
