Kevin Love’s exasperated message after his shock exit from the Miami Heat

The departure of Kevin Love was mainly due to financial issues, with the player clearly unhappy at the situation.

Update:

The Miami Heat continue to shake up their roster, aiming to give the franchise a fresh identity after finishing eighth in the Eastern Conference last season with a 37–45 record. Their playoff run was short-lived, as they were swept in the first round by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The team has confirmed the acquisition of Simone Fontecchio from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Duncan Robinson, the Heat’s longtime sharpshooter. In addition, Miami secured point guard Norman Powell, previously with the Los Angeles Clippers, as part of a three-team trade that also involved the Utah Jazz.

Details of the three-team trade:

  • Miami Heat received: Norman Powell
  • Los Angeles Clippers received: John Collins
  • Utah Jazz received: Kevin Love, Kyle Anderson, and a 2027 second-round pick from the Clippers

Kevin Love’s Reaction After Leaving Miami

The departures of Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson to the Jazz were primarily driven by salary cap considerations. To acquire Norman Powell, who earns $20 million annually, the Heat needed to free up over $13 million in cap space. Love’s $4.1 million salary combined with Anderson’s $9.2 million contract provided the necessary room, totaling $13.3 million and making the deal viable for all parties.

Love expressed his surprise on social media following the trade:

I never thought I’d be part of a math problem. Welcome to the NBA,” said the 36-year-old.

The veteran power forward spent the past three seasons with Miami, though injuries limited his availability. He appeared in only 55 games during the 2023–24 season and just 23 in 2024–25. Despite the setbacks, Love remains a valuable presence thanks to his experience and reliable shooting.

Reports suggest the Jazz may not keep Love on the roster. If he expresses a desire to move on, the team is expected to waive him, allowing him to explore free agency and potentially sign with another team on a veteran minimum deal.
