Lakers win big, but one stat from Doncic stole the night

Los Angeles continues its late-season surge with another victory, fueled by a spectacular night from its Slovenian star.

Los Angeles Lakers appear to be hitting their peak just as the playoff race tightens. They have now won four straight games and seven of their last eight.

Thursday’s matchup against the Chicago Bulls – a team already out of contention and missing several players – looked on paper like a brief respite in what has otherwise been a brutal stretch of the schedule. At times, it felt exactly like that. The Lakers built a 22-point lead in the third quarter and seemed comfortably in control, cruising through stretches of the game with little resistance.

But the night was not without tension. The Bulls fought back and trimmed the deficit to just seven points with less than nine minutes remaining. Los Angeles responded by steadying itself down the stretch, ultimately sealing a 142–130 victory built on a dazzling offensive display, even if the defensive intensity of recent games briefly faded.

Luka Dončić delivered the headline performance with one of his finest outings since arriving in Los Angeles. The Slovenian star finished with 51 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists, three steals and a scorching 9-of-14 from three-point range. It was the eighth 50-point game of his NBA career and his first in a Lakers uniform.

Austin Reaves also shined as Dončić’s trusted lieutenant. The guard finished with 30 points, five rebounds and seven assists, including five consecutive points in less than a minute at the decisive moment, just as Chicago had cut the lead to seven in the fourth quarter and was threatening a comeback.

The Lakers’ entire starting lineup delivered strong performances – especially notable considering the bench contributed just five points. LeBron James returned to the floor after missing the previous three games, posting 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Late in the game, as Dončić knocked down free throws for points 50 and 51 with 1:44 remaining, James encouraged the crowd to keep chanting “MVP, MVP!” for the Slovenian guard.

Deandre Ayton and Rui Hachimura also played key roles. Ayton recorded 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Hachimura added 15 points while shooting 60% from beyond the arc.

The victory moves the Lakers into sole possession of third place in the Western Conference, though their margin is razor thin. They sit half a game ahead of both the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets, and one game in front of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The coming days could prove decisive for their final standing. Los Angeles hosts Denver next, before traveling to Houston for two games next week – a stretch that may determine whether the Lakers can hold on to their current position heading into the playoffs.
