Estados Unidos Update:

LeBron James has exercised his $52.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers, setting the stage for a 23rd season in the NBA – but the door remains open for a potential departure if the franchise can’t convince him of their championship ambitions.

His agent Rich Paul explained that while James has opted in, he will still hold talks with the Lakers’ front office to assess their competitiveness and roster plans before committing emotionally to another run in purple and gold.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” said Paul. “He understands the Lakers are building for the future. He respects that, but he values a real shot at winning it all. We’re grateful for the collaboration we’ve had over these eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka], and we consider the Lakers a crucial part of his career.”

The 39-year-old averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds and one steal across 70 games in the 2024–25 regular season, earning All-NBA Second Team honors.

“We know how hard it is to win now while preparing for the future,” Paul continued. “We want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage of his life and career. He wants to make the most of every season he has left – and the Lakers understand that, support that, and want what’s best for him.”

Rumors have been swirling for weeks that James wanted to meet with the Lakers’ leadership before making his decision, pushing for roster upgrades to keep the team in contention.

The franchise is set to enjoy a major financial boost after being sold for a record $10 billion valuation to Mark Walter, the controlling owner of the Dodgers.

Meanwhile, Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka has already stated the team intends to sign a center this offseason. On the final day of the trade window, they pulled out of a deal for Charlotte Hornets big man Mark Williams after he failed his physical.
