Update:

As we hurtle ourselves through the repetitive songs, the nausea-inducing lights, and incessant visits from relatives, sport offers a lot of people a way out. The clock never stops on the field, pitch, or court, and sporting action is a key part of the festive calendar as the games come in endless waves.

The NBA is a perfect example: with games all throughout December into January, it’s a perfect time for in-form teams to carry on their run, while at the same time being the dreaded period of the year for those sides struggling to find a victory.

For the Los Angeles Lakers, they are set to play a number of high profile games over the next day and weeks, but they may have to do so without a key figure in the side.

Luka Doncic has been listed as ‘out′ for the Lakers’ upcoming game against the Phoenix Suns, with the Slovenian suffering a contusion. He exited Saturday’s 103-88 loss to the Clippers early after taking a knock. Head coach JJ Redick was right when he said that “it’s happened a bunch this season”; this will be the fourth missed game of the season due to a contusion in the same leg for Doncic.

Officially, the Lakers are listing Doncic as day to day, and at this stage a return for the game on the 25th against the Rockets looks unlikely.

“I like to compete... try not to go borderline with it”

As for the game itself, the fixture certainly carries a certain spice after the earlier clash between the two sides provided fans with one of the most memorable battles of the season. The Suns put up a huge fight against the Lakers to say the least which ended with a scuffle between LeBron James and Dillon Brooks, with the latter being ejected by the officials.

I just like to compete,” James said of the emerging rivalry with Brooks. “He’s going to compete. I’m going to compete. We’re going to get up in each other’s face. Try not to go borderline with it. I don’t really take it there. But we’re just competing and did that almost all the way to the end of the game.”

When asked if he exaggerated Brooks’ contact with him with just a few seconds left to get the referees’ attention so a tech would be called, James was direct: “That’s definitely a tech; if it was a tech on me in the [third quarter], then it was a tech on him right here, too.
