The official announcement of the 2023-24 Kia All-NBA 1st Team comes with extra good news for some players. One of them is Luka Doncic, who saw his presence in the team confirmed for the fifth consecutive season.

Since then, the Slovenian has not stopped breaking records: he has led the Texans to the Conference finals, something they also achieved in 2022. On that occasion, the Warriors emerged victorious (4-1) on the way to the last ring of their spectacular dynasty. Now, they face the Timberwolves, who have won the first game of a series that promises a lot, managing to regain home field advantage.

What are Luka Doncic’s current contract details?

Doncic’s presence in the All-NBA 1st Team allows him something stipulated in the recent agreement and in his contract. The point guard is on a five-year, $215 million contract that will end in 2027 (as long as he exercises the 2026 player option), but now he has the possibility of signing an even juicier one.

How much will Doncic’s new contract be worth?

Much juicier, in fact. It will be the biggest contract that has ever been signed in the history of the NBA and that can be agreed upon starting in the summer of 2025. It is a five-season contract that will bring in more than $346 million, a new record.

In the last of those years he would earn almost $79 million, a very high figure within a competition in full economic prosperity and that continues to increase its capital year on year.

Plenty of players to benefit from new NBA salary deal

Doncic is not the only one who will benefit from something like this. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would take less money ($294 million in four seasons) but he would earn more than $80 million in the last year of his contract, being the first player in history to reach that figure in a single campaign. Tyrese Haliburton and Anthony Edwards, who are on their rookie extension, add $41 million to their respective salaries thanks to entering the All-NBA 1st Team.

Other players, such as Jalen Brunson, will not benefit, since they signed as free agents. Jayson Tatum already met the maximum criteria last season and can go to $315 million in five seasons. Of course, no one will get as much as Doncic, the player who will earn the most money ever in a single contract. It’s yet another milestone for a star who continues to reach higher and higher as time goes on, something that was unimaginable in the past.

The criteria for this type of contracts changed in the last agreement. The limit for extensions of veteran players who have already completed their rookie contract extension increases: it went from 120% to 140% of the previous salary as the starting point of the extension. This was done as a way of trying to get players to sign extensions with their franchises and have fewer incentives to go on the market.

The striking case in this case was that of Jaylen Brown, one of the players who, in the previous situation, was going to benefit the most by going to the market. Now, the Celtics could offer him in the four-year extension for $189 million when in the current agreement the numbers remained at just over $160m.

With the new agreement, in addition, the Super Max Extension went to five years and $286 million. There are now more chances of entering into that bracket which obviously means more money for the players, who need a minimum number of matches to be eligible and, in turn, qualify for a better contract.
