Nick Kerr son of Warriors coach Steve Kerr is the new coach of G League affiliate Santa Cruz Warriors
It’s all about keeping things in the family in the Bay Area, after the Warriors’ head coach’s son was named head coach of the team’s G League affiliate.
As the saying goes, ‘Like father like son.’ Golden State Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, will now be able to count on the insight of his son, who has taken the reins of the team’s G League affiliate ahead of the coming campaign.
Steve Kerr’s son to coach Warriors’ G League affiliate, Santa Cruz Warriors
According to an official announcement on Wednesday, Nick Kerr, the son of the Golden State Warriors championship-winning coach, Steve Kerr, has been named as the head coach of the team’s G League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. A former University of California guard, Nick will begin his tenure in the 2023-24 season. As for his famous father, Steve Kerr was part of the now legendary Chicago Bulls dynasty of the 90s. Alongside the likes of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, Kerr made NBA history and would eventually go on to win five NBA championships.
Where his coaching is concerned, it’s interesting to note that Kerr didn’t have any experience as a head coach before he got the job with the Warriors. Of course, he did have a front-row seat for Greg Popovich’s coaching clinic as both a player - he finished his playing career with the San Antonio Spurs - and as an assistant, as he became part of Popovich’s coaching staff. The rest as they say is history. As coach of the Dubs, Steve Kerr has guided his team to four championships, and if we’re honest there could yet be more in store.
So, what about Nick Kerr’s experience?
Though Nick didn’t succeed as a player, it was clear from early on that he would have a life in the game. After joining the Spurs’ video room as an assistant ahead of the 2017-18 season, he then made a jump to Golden State’s G League affiliate for two seasons. This is to say, Nick knows the team that he’s about to take over. Regarding that process, the younger Kerr will replace Seth Cooper, who according to reports will now co-manage the Warriors’ player development program. Where the team itself is concerned, the Santa Cruz Warriors finished this most recent season with an 18-14 record that saw them end the campaign sitting in seventh place in the Western Conference.
