Not LeBron or Kobe: Cooper Flagg makes this NBA history

At 19, the Duke product has arrived in the NBA carrying huge expectations – and after a 51-point explosion, the hype looks increasingly justified.

The “Captain America” project is generating even more excitement than expected. Faces come and go, but the United States always seems to find national idols who transcend being merely standout figures in their respective sports. Derek Jeter, Aaron Judge, Landon Donovan, Christian Pulisic, Tom Brady, J.J. Watt and Michael Phelps are clear examples of that – athletes who symbolize patriotism and combine it seamlessly with natural talent the moment they step onto the field of play. Well, now Cooper Flagg appears ready to take on that same responsibility.

The 19-year-old forward arrived in the NBA as America’s brightest hope – in truth, he carried that status even before reaching the NCAA. Coming out of Duke, Flagg already knew his destiny. He understood the weight his talent would place on his shoulders, and the legacy he would eventually have to carve into the history books. After Friday night, April 3, those prophecies seem to be moving in the right direction.

Cooper Flagg’s historic 51-point game

In the loss to the Orlando Magic, Cooper looked exactly as many expected him to once he became a battle-tested veteran. He took command offensively and posted numbers that, frankly, are terrifying: 51 points, 19 for 30 from the field, 6 for 9 from 3-point range and 7 for 7 from the free-throw line. So where does the “historic” label come in? Performances like this may now seem almost routine in today’s NBA, but from a player who is not even 20 years old, this is something the league had never seen before.

Not Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Andrew Bynum, Victor Wembanyama, or any other player to appear in the NBA before turning 20 had managed a feat like this. Cooper Flagg seems to have something different in his blood, and chances are we still have not seen the full extent of what he can become.

The records keep coming for the player many expect to become the heir to James or Curry once time finally catches up with them. Flagg remains firmly on script as the next face of American basketball – especially in an era overflowing with international talent – and he threatens to become even better when you consider that this is, in all likelihood, the worst version of him we will see throughout his career.
