Update:

The New York Knicks have a storied history in the NBA, but their track record in the conference semifinals has been a rollercoaster ride. As one of the league’s original franchises, the Knicks have reached the conference semifinals multiple times, particularly during their golden eras in the 1970s and 1990s.

However, their fans are well used to feelings of despair and disappointment, as consistency has often eluded them.

In the 1970s, the Knicks were a powerhouse. Led by stars like Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, and Bill Bradley, they made frequent deep playoff runs. They won two NBA championships (1970 and 1973), and this marked the team’s first sustained success at the elite level of basketball.

After a decade of wobbliness, it was in the 1990s when the Knicks found themselves to be top contenders once again: they made the conference semifinals six times between 1992 and 2000. In 1994 and 1999 they went even better, reaching the NBA Finals. There was no title, but a strong ‘we were right up there’ feeling around the side.

Since the turn of the decade, Knicks fans have endured a long stint of terrible performances in the postseason. The team have struggled with instability, poor management decisions, and a host of other issues. Between 2001 and 2020, the Knicks reached the conference semifinals just once—in 2013—when a Carmelo Anthony-led squad lost to the Indiana Pacers.

But sport is like that, and we as fans all live in hope. That hope is renewed this season, with the Knicks back in the 2024–25 NBA playoffs and advancing to the conference semifinals. Led by stars like Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle, this new era of Knicks basketball feels less of a flash in the pan and more like something the faithful fans can get behind.

Fans are daring to believe again, hoping that this latest run could revive the franchise’s winning legacy—and perhaps signal the beginning of another golden age.

The New York Knicks’ next game is Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Boston Celtics. The game is scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025, at 7:00 PM Eastern Time (ET). It will take place at TD Garden in Boston and will be broadcast on TNT, TruTV, and Max.
