Seattle and Las Vegas key frontrunners for NBA expansion teams
ESPN’s Shams Charania claims that a meeting in March will be key in deciding the location of the two new expansion teams.
It’s looking more likely than ever that both the cities of Seattle and Las Vegas are the definitive frontrunners for the NBA’s first expansion in over 20 years.
ESPN reports that the NBA Board of Governors is expected to formally vote on expansion this summer and that Adam Silver has moved from “speculating” to “evaluating.” He recently met with Washington Governor Bob Ferguson to discuss bringing the SuperSonics back to Seattle, confirming that the league is in the “due diligence” phase.
While the vote may happen this summer, the teams wouldn’t hit the court immediately. Experts suggest a potential tip-off for the 2027-2028 or 2028-2029 season, allowing time for an expansion draft and organizational setup.
Charania also states that the introduction of a Vegas and Seattle team could see the likes of New Orleans, Minnesota or Memphis realign from the Western Conference to the East.
