Giannis leaves Milwaukee: The end of an era for the Bucks and the dawn of a new superteam in Miami
Giannis slipped out the back door — leaving the Bucks as champions, but also bent the franchise by blaming the team for every setback.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s résumé is already the stuff of basketball mythology. Two‑time MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player, 10‑time All‑Star (and MVP in 2021), seven First‑Team All‑NBA selections, four First‑Team All‑Defense nods, NBA Cup champion and MVP, Magic Johnson Award winner, a spot among the NBA’s 75 greatest players ever — and, of course, the 2021 NBA championship and Finals MVP. He even added a EuroBasket bronze in 2025.

A franchise‑shaking trade
After 13 seasons in Milwaukee, on June 22, the Bucks traded Antetokounmpo — along with Bobby Portis — to the Miami Heat in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jáquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis.
The move ends one of the most meaningful relationships between a superstar and a franchise in modern NBA history. Milwaukee tried everything to keep Giannis happy — and ironically, that constant effort is what slowly pushed him away. The Bucks delayed a rebuild for years, clinging to their generational star. In the end, they were forced to begin that rebuild by sending him to a direct rival they’ve battled repeatedly in the playoffs.
Miami, meanwhile, just landed another crown jewel for Pat Riley, adding Giannis to a lineage that includes Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, and Jimmy Butler. The Heat are now firmly in the title hunt. The Bucks, by contrast, enter a long, quiet stretch in the wilderness.

From anonymity to superstardom
Giannis’ rise began in 2016–17, when he won Most Improved Player under Jason Kidd. He exploded the next season, averaging 27 points and 10 rebounds, even as Kidd was fired and replaced by interim coach Joe Prunty. Two straight first‑round exits followed — Raptors in 2017, Celtics in 2018.
Everything changed when Mike Budenholzer arrived.
Under Bud, Giannis became a legend:
- Back‑to‑back MVPs
- Defensive Player of the Year in the same season as his second MVP — a feat previously achieved only by Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, and Kevin Garnett
His name was officially among the giants.
But the championship still felt out of reach. In 2019, the Bucks fell to the eventual champion Raptors, with Kawhi Leonard outplaying Giannis. In 2020, after a 56‑win season, the pandemic halted everything, and Milwaukee collapsed in the Orlando bubble — ironically against the Heat.
It felt like the title might never come.
Then came Jrue Holiday.

The moment Giannis became immortal
With Holiday onboard, the Bucks finally broke through. In the 2021 Finals, they defeated the Phoenix Suns, delivering Milwaukee’s first championship in 50 years — since Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul‑Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor) won in 1971.
Giannis delivered one of the greatest playoff runs ever:
- 30.2 points, 12.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists per game in the postseason
- 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds, 5 assists in the Finals
- A legendary 50‑point closeout game with 14 rebounds and 5 blocks
He cried on the court, promising he’d be a Buck “forever and ever.”
But forever ended in 2026.
It is indeed fresh and clean 😮💨

A new chapter begins
Milwaukee’s run stalled after the title. Injuries, roster limitations, and playoff disappointments piled up. Giannis’ patience thinned. The Bucks’ attempts to satisfy him — roster moves, coaching changes, contract extensions — only highlighted how fragile their window had become.
Now, the Bucks finally begin the rebuild they avoided for years. And Giannis heads to Miami, where the Heat will chase another banner.
