Steph Curry, the Warriors’ one billion dollar man

The contract would make Curry only the second active NBA player with a nine-figure net worth.

One billion dollars. This is the staggering sum that Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is ready to negotiate with his clothing sponsor, Under Armour, to extend his current contract. Curry’s deal mirrors The King’s current lifetime contract with Nike, putting Steph in territory occupied by LeBron James.

According to a claim by Matt Sullivan of Rolling Stone, Stephen Curry is close to signing a lifetime contract with Under Armour that could be worth more than $1 billion. While the figure is stunning, it is also not a complete surprise, given the size of Curry’s brand. As he ascended to NBA superstardom, Steph practically single-handedly boosted the stock price of Under Armour. So it is only fitting that he receives a new agreement of this magnitude.

“Stephen is a once-in-a-generation talent and has an unprecedented influence on the game of basketball,” Adam Peake, executive vice president of global marketing, said. “His work ethic, uncompromising self-belief, and commitment to the community are characteristics that make Stephen the perfect partner to ignite the growth of Under Armour in the sport of basketball and around the world.”

Steph’s current state of contract

Curry’s current contract expires in 2024, and it is expected that his next contract will be identical to LeBron’s in that it will also be a lifetime contract. Considering that Under Armour is paying him ten figures, the least they can expect from him is a lifelong commitment.

Tension between Steph and the owner of Under Armour

However, it is important to note that Stephen Curry and Under Armour founder Kevin Plank are now experiencing some tension. The 50-year-old billionaire insists that he and Steph have no beef, but this may not be entirely accurate. Curry has previously criticized how Plank operated his firm. More recently, the two appeared to be at war over Plank’s fervent support for former U.S. President Donald Trump, among other issues.
