Suns & Wizards agree to Bardley Beal & Chris Paul trade. What are the details of the massive deal?

It doesn’t get any bigger than this with the Suns and the Wizards finalizing what could well be the biggest move we see during this NBA offseason.

In the first marquee move of the NBA’s offseason, the Phoenix Suns and Washington Wizards have agreed to a massive trade that involves the veteran point guard Chris Paul and sharpshooter Bradley Beal. The deal brings to an end what has been intense speculation about Paul’s future.

The Suns & Wizards agree to huge trade involving Bradley Beal & Chris Paul

According to the reports on Sunday, the Washington Wizards are trading Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns in a blockbuster deal that will also see Chris Paul head in the opposite direction. The news does come as somewhat of a shock with Beal having signed a five-year, $251 million max extension contract just last offseason. What’s interesting about the scenario, is that Beal’s contract actually had a no-trade clause in it, however, it appears he was willing to waive it in order to facilitate his move to Phoenix. Needless to say, the Suns who were already considered a contender in the West with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, just got a whole lot stronger. Regarding who else was involved in the massive deal, take a look below:

Suns receive

Wizards receive

  • Chris Paul
  • Landry Shamet
  • Multiple second-round picks
  • Multiple pick swaps

Where the fine print is concerned, it’s worth noting that the Wizards will have to guarantee a further $9 million of Paul’s salary in order for the deal to stay under the cap limit. What that means is that Paul’s guaranteed salary will now jump to around $25 million. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that reports suggest that the Wizards are in fact searching for another contender to pass Paul off to - the Los Angeles Clippers have been mentioned.

Bradley Beal’s move was a shock but not a surprise

In all fairness, it’s been quite some time now that Beal’s name has been connected with a move away from the Wizards. Of course, the franchise previously resisted the urge to cash in on one of its prized possessions as one would but with the recent appointment of former Clippers general manager, Michael Winger, the winds of change started to blow. Given free rein by owner Ted Leonsis, Winger began to build a roster from scratch and it seems he’s continuing to do so.

Where the Suns are concerned, it seems they have a knack for going big. As we mentioned before they’ve now got Kevin Durant who they got just before the trade deadline in exchange for Mikal Bridges and four first-round picks. Ironically, as much as the addition of Durant was incredible, it also affected the team’s depth, and so it was almost expected when they were given their marching orders in the second round of the playoffs by the eventual champions, Denver Nuggets.

So, what happens now?

To be perfectly honest, we’re not sure but it’s going to be interesting one way or another. For starters, the Suns fired coach Monty Williams following their playoff exit. Former Lakers championship-winning coach, Frank Vogel, is now the man at the helm. At his disposal, there is now perhaps the most lethal offensive trio in the league. There is of course still an issue of depth - they gave up quite a bit for Durant - but it’s got to be said that they have a degree of firepower that nobody else does. They’ll have to perform quite the balancing act to build around their three stars, but assuming they do, keep an eye on them. As for the Wizards and the newly acquired Chris Paul, it’ll be interesting to see how the scenario pans out and how they can move forward after it does.
