Update:

In a surprising turn of events, the Los Angeles Clippers and veteran guard James Harden are jointly exploring trade possibilities ahead of the NBA’s February 5 trade deadline. According to league sources, both sides have engaged in discussions about finding a new destination for the 36-year-old star, whose place with the Clippers has become uncertain as the deadline approaches.

Harden, an 11-time All-Star and former MVP, has a contract that gives him veto power over any potential move, a key factor that teams must consider if they pursue him. This reflects the unusual nature of this situation: it is not just rumoured interest from other clubs, but an active search for a fit that satisfies both Harden and the Clippers before Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET cutoff.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have emerged as one of the most serious suitors in early talks. Sources indicate that discussions between Cleveland and Los Angeles have gained traction, with the Cavs expressing a strong interest in adding Harden to their roster.

Harden trade rumours “a surprise” says teammate

Cleveland’s motivation seems tied to a push for a deeper playoff run, even if taking on the 36-year-old would come with risks given his age and contract situation.

While the specifics of what Cleveland might offer, whether it includes current players or future draft compensation, are not yet public, the reported interest has generated significant buzz in NBA circles.

Harden missed the Clippers’ last two games due to what the team described as “personal reasons,” adding to the uncertainty around his role and future in Los Angeles.

Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue has largely declined to comment on the trade situation directly, emphasising Harden’s value to the team but not committing to his long-term presence: “who wouldn’t want to have James Harden?” he said when asked.

As well as the coach, star forward Kawhi Leonard was asked about the trade rumours breaking during the game against the 76ers. “Yeah! Of course that’s a surprise,” he told the media. “I was playing. Yeah, I’m surprised.”
