The unknown college major that Stephen Curry took over 12 years to complete and was unable to attend graduation
Despite NBA stardom with the Warriors, the three-point man quietly pursued an academic goal for years, culminating in a unique celebration.

In May 2022, while leading the Golden State Warriors through the NBA playoffs, Stephen Curry achieved a personal milestone that had been over a decade in the making: he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Davidson College. This accomplishment came almost 13 years after he left college to enter the NBA draft in 2009.
The Curry jersey retired post degree
The college, located in North Carolina, had a tradition of retiring jerseys only for athletes who completed their degrees. Curry’s commitment to finishing his education not only honored this tradition but also fulfilled a promise he made to his mother upon leaving for the NBA.
Due to his NBA commitments, Curry couldn’t attend the standard graduation ceremony in May 2022. Instead, the college organized a special event in August 2022 to honor his achievements. During this ceremony, Curry was inducted into Davidson’s Hall of Fame, had his No. 30 jersey retired, and was presented with his diploma. He became the first Davidson athlete to have his jersey number retired, ensuring that no other Wildcats basketball player will wear No. 30 again.
Curry expressed deep gratitude for his time at Davidson, stating that attending the college was the best decision he ever made. He acknowledged the community, the education he received, and the influence of former coach Bob McKillop in shaping his path.
Which Warriors have had their jersey retired?
After Davidson, most expect Curry to also have his Warriors jersey retired when he steps off court for good. If so, he’ll join an impressive list:
- Andre Iguodala (#9) – won four championships and was named 2015 NBA Finals MVP.
- Wilt Chamberlain (#13) – one of the most dominant players ever and set the NBA’s single-game scoring record with 100 points in 1962.
- Tom Meschery (#14) – solid player in the early years and became the first foreign-born player to make an NBA All-Star appearance.
- Alvin Attles (#16) – lifelong Warrior – 64 years with the franchise as a player, coach, and executive.
- Chris Mullin (#17) – one of the best scorers in Warriors history, and five-time All-Star.
- Rick Barry (#24) – known for his underhand free throws and all-around brilliance, won Finals MVP in 1975 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987.
- Nate Thurmond (#42) - Warriors’ all-time leading rebounder with 12,771 boards and seven-time All-Star.
