The NBA Finals begins this week, and while all of the attention will be focused on the stars on the court, these guys will try to stay out of the spotlight.

The NBA Finals gets under way this Thursday after a week long break that allowed players of each team to rest and refresh for for the championship series. I’m sure the referees selected have enjoyed the time between games, but this week it’s back to work for the players and refs alike.

Getting selected to referee the Finals is an honor just like making it to the Finals as a player or coach. It’s the pinnacle of the job, and a job only reserved for the best of the best refs.

Many of the names will be familiar to you if you watch NBA basketball on a regular basis while others may be a bit more unknown. Legendary ref Scott Foster will be officiating his 17th while Tony Brothers will be taking part in his 13th NBA Finals, while Kevin Scott is the newcomer of the crew. Scott has been selected to just his second Finals series in his young career.

These are the 12 refs selected to the NBA Finals this season:

  • Tony Brothers (13th Finals)
  • Bill Kennedy (6th Finals)
  • James Capers (12th Finals)
  • Courtney Kirkland (4th Finals)
  • Marc Davis (13th Finals)
  • Kevin Scott (2nd Finals)
  • Scott Foster (17th Finals)
  • Josh Tiven (5th Finals)
  • John Goble (8th Finals)
  • James Williams (4th Finals)
  • David Guthrie (7th Finals)
  • Zach Zarba (11th Finals)

“Each of these 12 officials have shown excellent skills, focus and commitment throughout the season and in the previous playoff rounds,” said Byron Spruell, NBA President, League Operations. “Congratulations to this group for earning the right to work on the game’s biggest stage, the NBA Finals.”
