Update:

For basketball fans in New York and around the world, the buzz around the Los Angeles Lakers’ upcoming visit to Madison Square Garden has reached a fever pitch. Tickets for Sunday’s game against the New York Knicks have soared to levels not seen in nearly a decade, driven largely by speculation that this could be one of the final times LeBron James takes the floor at the Garden.

According to recent data from resale platforms such as TickPick and Gametime, the average price for a ticket on the secondary market has climbed past 900 US dollars.

That figure makes it the most expensive regular-season NBA game in terms of ticket cost since Kobe Bryant’s farewell appearance at the same arena back in April 2016. At that time, ticket prices averaged over 1,000 dollars for Bryant’s final game experience.

“I’m just trying to take everything in... I haven’t made a decision”

These numbers dwarf typical pricing for standard regular-season matchups and reflect both the situation of both teams as well as the uncertainty surrounding LeBron’s future in the NBA. The so-called “get-in” price, the lowest cost to attend, is also elevated, with some reports putting it near 450 dollars even before resale fees are added.

At 41 years old and playing on a contract year, James has not formally declared that this will be his final season. However, he has openly acknowledged the possibility of retirement looming, which has only intensified interest in catching a glimpse of him. While in his hometown of Cleveland recently, James was visibly emotional when honoured with a tribute video, further fuelling talk that his career is entering its final stages.

“I’m just trying to take everything in, not take the moments for granted,” James said. “Because it could be [my last season]. I obviously haven’t made a decision on the future, but it very well could be [his last].”

The Knicks, however, are not a passive element in this story. With New York in the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and stars like Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns getting the fans on their feet, there is plenty on the line beyond LeBron’s personal narrative.
