The Miami Heat suffered a significant setback as their talented guard, Tyler Herro, underwent surgery to repair his broken right hand. Herro sustained the injury during the first round of the playoffs, having played only 19 minutes before the unfortunate incident. Unless the Heat secures the Eastern Conference title, it is unlikely that Herro will make a return to the court this postseason.

The incident occurred when Herro dove for a loose ball late in the second quarter of the Heat’s stunning 130-117 victory over the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the opening game of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Recalling the moment, Herro admitted, “I watched the video and still don’t know where I hit my hand. I probably shouldn’t have dove into it, but I was trying to create some energy. We were on the road in my hometown. Just trying to play hard.”

When will Tyler Herro be back for the Heat?

According to a report by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel on May 24th, it was revealed that Herro had received clearance to resume non-contact court work. The guard has been cleared to continue using his shooting hand in drills and may even have the opportunity to take some shots during practice.

Following the surgery, Herro disclosed that his recovery period is estimated to be four to six weeks.

Ahead of Game 1, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN provided an update regarding the ex-Kentucky player.

Via Wojnarowski on ESPN: “I’m told that Game 2 on Sunday looms as a possibility for Tyler Herro. He’ll have a couple more days here to test out that fractured right hand that has now healed. He’s on the court working out. Can that hand take contact? You know, certainly, with players coming back from an injury like that, you’re gonna have to be ready to absorb contact. Certainly, Sunday Game 2 is something he will test it out for, but if not Sunday, then Game 3 on Wednesday back in Miami. I think, barring a setback. There’s confidence Tyler Herro will be ready to return then.

Due to Herro’s unavailability, the Heat is currently without their third-highest scorer, lagging behind Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. Herro proved his abilities during the regular season with an outstanding average of 20.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists.

Reflecting on the unfortunate event, Herro expressed his disappointment, saying, “Being in the playoffs, you work so hard all year to be in this moment. I feel like I had some things to prove this postseason. It was a tough moment, and I still can’t believe it.

The Miami Heat are currently facing a tough challenge as they play the NBA Finals against the Denver Nuggets without the valuable contributions of Tyler Herro. The Heat medical team is doing everything possible to have Herro fit and available to Spoelstra.
