Update:

After back-to-back defeats, the San Antonio Spurs ended 2025 on a high by coming from behind to beat the New York Knicks on New Year’s Eve. That victory came at a cost, however, as Victor Wembanyama was forced to leave the game with a left knee hyperextension in the fourth quarter.

The injury occurred with 10:32 remaining when Wembanyama landed awkwardly after grabbing a rebound. The mood inside the building instantly shifted. All 18,602 fans held their breath as the Spurs star lay on the floor grimacing in pain.

Wembanyama walks off, reassures fans

The moment of fear was brief. With help from Stephon Castle, Wembanyama got back to his feet and walked to the locker room under his own power.

After the game, Wembanyama said the medical staff had to hold him back from returning and that he did not expect the injury to be serious.

MRI brings positive Wemby news

That optimism was confirmed on New Year’s Day when the French superstar underwent an MRI scan, which showed no ligament damage, according to ESPN.

That is clearly good news for the Spurs and the player himself, although it doesn’t mean he will not miss some playing time.

Will Wembanyama play against the Pacers on Friday?

Wembanyama did not travel to Indianapolis for Friday’s game against the Pacers. San Antonio’s bunched schedule could force him to sit out at least one more matchup. The Spurs are also in action at home against the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday, a game Wembanyama is listed as questionable for, according to ESPN sources.

The 21-year-old center is considered day-to-day for now, with the Spurs hopeful he will be ready for the road game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday, January 6, if not sooner.
