Warriors 140 - 137 Jazz summary, stats, scores and highlights | NBA
Kuminga has seen his point production dip now that Wiggins and Green are getting regular time, but he's still a high flyer who can throw it down with the best of them and get you 20 on any given night as he showed last month.
The Jazz may have been been down double digits with 4:00 left, but they fought until the end, and had a chance to tie it up at the buzzer but Collin Sexton missed a three to send the Utah into the All-Star Break on a four game losing streak.
The Warriors built up a 19 point lead and seemed like they were going to cruise to victory, but the Jazz came roaring back in the final five minutes. Keyonte George tied a rookie record for three pointers hitting 9/16 in the comeback bid for Utah.
Thompson was feeling it in the third quarter. He may have had to come off the bench to start the game, but he was there at the end to finish the game. He had 18 straight Warrior points in the third, and finished the night with 35 in 28 minutes on 13/22 shooting. He's a veteran and seems willing to embrace his new role, whatever that might be. If he continues to have nights like this, he won' mind coming off the bench.
Curry had a quiet night scoring after hitting seven or more threes in his last four games. He finished the night with 16 points on 4/14 shooting but had 10 assists including this one to Kuminga.
Klay Thompson hit the 15,000 point mark in the first half, and to celebrate he went wild in the third quarter.
The Warriors scored 48 points in the second quarter to erase an 11 point deficit and go into the halftime break up 13. Guys like rookie Brandon Podziemski are vital to this aging team, especially in a back to back series and he delivered the goods in the first half, scoring all of his 13 points (including this buzzer beater to end the half) in the opening two quarters.
The story of the night, and really the season for the Warriors has been Klay Thompson and his diminished role on the team. The four time champ came off the bench in Utah but showed he's got plenty more left in the tank, even if it means he may not be a starter on a nightly basis.
For a change, it was Draymond Green taking some punishment in the Warriors' previous game against the Clippers when Ivica Zubac hit him with an elbow to the face. He returned to the game that same night and something must have happened with that bow to the head as he went wild on the offensive end. He 23 points on 9/14 shooting.
The Golden State Warriors are heading to the All-Star Break with a win after their narrow victory over the Utah Jazz who had a chance to tie the game up at the buzzer. Klay Thompson had 35 points off the bench to lead his team to a 140-137 win.
Johnathan Kuminga and company came into the second end of a back to back series having won five of six, and looking to keep the momentum going into the week long break. They were trailing early after a hot shooting start for the Jazz in the first quarter. Utah hit 9 threes to take an 11 point advantage early in the first half.

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM UTAH!!!
Get used to the new starting five for the Warriors. It's likely going to look more like this than their classic line up that we have grown so accustomed to seeing over the last decade. Klay Thompson is starting the game on the bench and it's Brandon Podziemski getting the nod tonight in Utah with the ususal cast of characters, Curry, Wiggins, Kuminga and Green.
No LeBron in the Bay
The struggling Warriors apparently reached out to LeBron and the Lakers, trying to tempt the league’s All-Time leading scorer to join forces with Steph Curry and his good friend Draymond Green. It would have been a move than shifted the power balance in the West, but in the end nothing came of the potential block buster deal. In the end neither team made a move which means both the Lakers and the Warriors will have to finish off the season with what they have, which up to this point of the season has been enough to get them the 9th and 10th seeds respectively.
Draymond takes a shot
In last night’s game against the Clippers it was Draymond Green receiving some a blow to the face rather than dishing it out. We are used to the Warriors bad boy getting himself into some some trouble for his on court behavior. We have seen him choke Rudy Gobert, stomp on Domantas Sabonis and take a swipe at Jusef Nurkic. Last night it was Ivica Zubac who inadvertently elbowed Draymond in the chin. He went down in a heap and quickly went to the locker room with the Warriors medical staff. It wasn’t long before he returned to the bench, and a few minutes later he checked back into the game. He has been cleared to play tonight after going through concussion protocol quickly after taking the shot from Zubac.
NBA Standings
Taking a look at the NBA Standings on the final day before the All-Star Break, we see both of these teams sitting at the bottom of the standings. Utah’s three game slump has dropped them below .500 and out of Play-In Position in 11th place. The Warriors are currently in the final Play-In spot sitting in 10th place, right above the Jazz, a game and a half above Utah. They will want to avoid having to play for their playoff lives in the Play-In one the end of the season comes rolling around, but they are 4.5 games behind the Mavericks who are in 7th in the West.
Utah could use a star
We have grown accustomed to seeing NBA teams led by one or even two super stars in modern day basketball. That’s not really how the Utah Jazz operate. Their top scorer in Lauri Markkanen aveagering 23.4 ppg, but he’s not quite in the superstar stratosphere. That’s because the Jazz use a scoring by committee system in which Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson and Jonh Collins all contribute. In a perfect world having a system like this creates matchup problems for opposing defenses, but when the team is struggling like they currently are you need a superstar to take the team on his shoulders and carry them to victory.
Kuminga coming of age
One of the main reasons for the Warriors resurgence over the last month has been the explosion of Johnathan Kuminga. Kuminga was vocal about the lack of opportunity under Steve Kerr earlier in the season, but since then injuries and suspensions opened the door for the former first round pick and he took advantage of his opportunity. He was playing his best ball at the end of February, scoring 20 points in eight straight games. Since Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins have returned to their original roles, Kuminga’s court time remains the same but he’s only had two 20 point games in the last seven. Golden State are going to need all hands on deck from now until the rest of the season, and that applies to Kuminga who is turning into the Warriors second best scoring option.
Jazz last game
The Jazz welcomed the LA Lakers to the Delta Center losing their third straight game against a team that was without LeBron James. It was Anthony Davis and Rui Hachimura leading the way in Salt Lake City, but the Jazz stayed with LA for the first 30 minutes of the game. Colin Sexton led a Jazz starting five that saw each player score 10+, but they went cold in the final 18 minutes and allowed Davis and company to pull away. Davis has 37 and 15 while Hachimura posted 22 and D’Angelo Russell dished 17 assists and was a rebound away from a triple double as the Lakers cruised to victory in the final minutes of the fourth quarters.
Warriors last game
The Warriors were at home last night taking on the LA Clippers who are suddenly in the conversation of top teams in the league. Golden State went into the game riding a five game win streak and were on their way to rattling off a sixth straight, but they blew a 14 point lead in the fourth quarter. Steph Curry dropped 41 in the Bay, but it wasn’t enough to hold off a comeback bid from Paul George and Norman Powell as LA scored 44 points in the final 12 minutes. Powell hit 4 threes in the last seven minutes of the game to help the Clips take the lead with and keep in the lead in the final three and a half minutes.
