Update:

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has revealed that he’s set for his long-awaited comeback, telling a French newspaper, “I’m officially cleared to return,” following a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis.

“It just happened,” Wembanyama told L’Équipe. “I got the green light from the Spurs’ medical staff just [on Friday]. Phew, I’ll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again.”

Shortly after the All-Star break, the 21-year-old was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder—a form of blood clot. ESPN reported that while the team had expected Wembanyama to be ready for the start of training camp in September, he has actually recovered ahead of schedule.

Wembanyama opens up on Spurs future

In his sophomore campaign, Wembanyama made a sensational leap from his rookie season, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 3.8 blocks across 46 appearances before being shut down in mid-February due to the DVT diagnosis. He also shot efficiently—47.6% from the field, 35.2% from three, and 83.6% from the free-throw line—and earned his first NBA All-Star selection while once again leading the league in blocks.

The Spurs finished 34–48, placing 13th in the Western Conference and 4th in the Southwest Division, narrowly missing the playoffs. Offensively, they averaged 113.9 points per game (16th in the league), with 43.7 rebounds (19th) and 28.6 assists (6th). Defensively, they conceded 116.7 points per game.

As part of his recovery process, Wemby spent 10 days at a Shaolin temple in Zhengzhou, China, where he worked on mental focus and even learned some kung fu.

Wembanyama has also spoken about his long-term goals, saying, “I know that not every player in the NBA has the same ambitions, but it’s obviously my dream to spend my entire career with a single franchise. Here. In San Antonio.”
